Cats are, by their very nature, clean creatures and do not like being unclean.  This is likewise true about kitties.  Even the most immature kitty can be found trying to clean itself.  There will be are times during your cat’s life however when it will be unable to clean itself, or it could be that the kind of cat you select has high maintenance fur (such as a long hair Persian) and requires a little additional help to keep its fur in top condition.

In spite of not desiring to be dirty, and despite the continual self-grooming, this doesn't automatically mean that your kitten is going to relish your intervention in its personal grooming routine.  The best way to avert this is to introduce your kitten to being groomed by you from the very beginning.  If you get into an immediate habit of combing out and brushing your kitties fur once or twice a week, then if the day arrives when he’s just in too much of a  mess, or too ill to take care of himself, then he won’t mind your assistance.

Although you will not be able to introduce him to a bath, you can acquaint him to the idea of a bath utilizing a dish (without water) and a dampish washcloth, but this ought to be done every a couple of weeks.  Grooming in the form of brushing nonetheless should be done more often.  One perfect time for this is at nighttime when you’re watching television and kitty crawls up onto your lap.  Have a brush handy (a baby brush is fine for a short haired kitten) and softly brush the kitten in the direction his fur grows.  He’ll becomet used to how this feels, and oftentimes will start to purr his approval.  If you have a longer-furred kitten, set aside 30 minutes least twice a week to thoroughly comb through his coat.  This will insure that tangles don’t build up and his fur will remain healthy looking.

As he becomes older, and is permitted out of doors, make sure that you spend 5-10 minutes with him each week to gently put the flea comb through his fur.  This means that you are certain he remains flea-free, and at the very least, can start a flea-removal treatment should your comb discover something.

The time you commit grooming your kitty will bear dividends when he becomes a cat that requires help with cleaning his fur.  A cat that is accustomed to being groomed is far easier to maintain than one who turns every grooming session into a conflict of wills!
